News Capsule: Sugar Prices Remain Steady in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh Amid Balanced Demand and Supply
★ Ex-mill sugar prices remained steady on Friday in the key sugar markets of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, as demand and supply were largely balanced, according to trade sources.
★ In Maharashtra, sugar mills are not facing any pressure to exhaust the government's July sales quota. With demand remaining normal and supplies balanced, mills have refrained from reducing prices.
★ In Uttar Pradesh, however, a few mills lowered their prices by around ₹50 per quintal to attract buyers and liquidate their July sales quota. Despite this, most mills continue to follow a wait-and-watch approach.
★ Sugar prices have risen by more than 15% over the past few weeks amid concerns over tighter supplies and the impact of a weak monsoon. Cumulative rainfall during June 1–July 24 remained 16% below normal, adding a weather premium to sugar prices.
★ Traders believe sugar prices are likely to remain stable in the near term, as buyers have become cautious after the recent sharp rally and are reluctant to purchase at higher prices.
★ The market is now awaiting the government's announcement of the August monthly sales quota. Trade participants expect the government to fix a quota higher than July's 2.2 million tonnes to increase market supplies and help contain sugar prices.
