News Capsule: Punjab Cotton Sowing Falls to Record Low of 80,000 Hectares, Raising Production Concerns
★ Cotton sowing in Punjab has declined to just 80,000 hectares in the 2026-27 season, the lowest level ever recorded in the state's history. Cotton acreage has been shrinking consistently over the past six years, adversely affecting both production and productivity, according to a written reply by the Union Minister of State for Textiles in the Rajya Sabha.
★ Experts believe the continuous decline in cotton cultivation could have a negative impact on Punjab's farm economy, the textile industry, and farmers' incomes. Although the state has been promoting crop diversification, the sharp fall in cotton acreage has emerged as a major concern for the sector.
