News Capsule: Turmeric Falls Sharply on Higher Arrivals and Aggressive Selling
★ Turmeric futures on NCDEX witnessed a sharp decline for the second consecutive session on Friday. The most active August contract closed at ₹20,254 per quintal, down 6% from the previous session. The contract had touched a record high of ₹22,890 per quintal on Wednesday. From that peak, prices have now fallen by around ₹2,636 per quintal.
★ The key factors behind the decline include aggressive selling by traders, higher exchange margins and improving arrivals in spot markets. Farmers and stockists are actively liquidating stocks at elevated prices. Turmeric arrivals jumped 333% year-on-year to 8,873 tonnes.
★ Weak demand at higher prices has also made spice manufacturers cautious about fresh purchases. Ample availability of lower-quality turmeric has added further pressure to the market. In North Karnataka, resowing has been completed following recent rains, reducing concerns over next year’s production.
★ Despite the recent correction, turmeric prices remain more than 13% higher over the past month and over 52% higher year-on-year. This has encouraged farmers and stockists to book profits at higher levels.
★ Turmeric futures are expected to find strong support around ₹19,480 per quintal, while ₹21,280 is seen as resistance. Further correction is possible in the near term until fresh demand emerges.

Cumin Also Under Pressure
★ Jeera futures fell for the fourth consecutive session, closing at ₹20,730 per quintal. Increased selling by growers and weak domestic and export demand have kept pressure on prices. Average weekly arrivals increased 149% to 7,952 tonnes.

Coriander Recovers
★ In contrast, the August coriander futures contract gained 1.6% to ₹15,262 per quintal. Although export demand remains weak, expectations of tighter supplies due to lower production last season, reduced acreage and yield losses during crop development are providing support.
★ Overall, turmeric is facing pressure from profit-booking and rising arrivals after its recent sharp rally. Unless fresh demand emerges, prices may remain volatile with a further downside bias in the near term.
