News Capsule: USDA November Report: India’s Soybean Oil Production and Imports Decline
★ According to the latest USDA November report, India’s soybean oil production, stocks, and imports have all undergone significant changes. The projections for 2025–26 indicate that the country’s supply situation is shifting, with demand patterns evolving and dependence on imports adjusting accordingly.
★ India’s soybean oil production is estimated at 1.63 million tons, which is 3.5 million tons lower than last year’s 1.98 million tons.
★ The most notable change this time is in imports. India’s soybean oil imports are projected at 4.1 million tons, down by 1.3 million tons from last year’s 5.4 million tons. Higher opening stocks have reduced the need for additional imports.
★ India’s domestic consumption is estimated at 6.42 million tons, slightly lower than last year’s 6.62 million tons. Price fluctuations and the availability of alternative edible oils have affected consumption patterns.
★ India’s opening stock of soybean oil stood at 1.49 million tons, nearly double last year’s 0.75 million tons.
★ However, due to reduced imports and lower production, the ending stock is estimated at 1.25 million tons, marginally (0.1 million tons) lower than last year.
★ Despite comfortable stock levels and adequate global availability, India’s supply outlook remains stable. But rising import costs and volatility in international prices may pose challenges going forward.
