News Capsule: Wheat Prices Decline Due to OMSS Scheme
★ Wheat sale tenders will be issued on the Value Junction portal on 9 January. The sale will be conducted at a reserve price of ₹2,550 per quintal (transportation cost extra).
★ During the November and December weeks, 0.53 million tonnes of wheat were allocated. For 2026, 3 million tonnes of wheat have been allocated, but the offtake has been very weak.
★ IGrain India believes that around 2 million tonnes of wheat could be sold by FCI in the current season.
★ Over the past two months, a large quantity of wheat has moved from North India to South India via multiple railway rakes. As a result, stocks in North India are gradually declining, and wheat availability on the online portal has also reduced.
★ As of 1 January 2026, FCI held 27.65 million tonnes of wheat stock. Government procurement will begin from 1 April 2026.
★ Higher wheat production is expected in the Rabi 2026–27 season.
★ With the start of sales under the OMSS, some additional pressure on prices may be seen.
