New Delhi. Nigella prices are currently trading lower, with prices declining by ₹10-₹12 per kg over the past 8-10 days. Prices are expected to rise in the near future, as current buying support is weak, while stockists are consistently selling at higher prices. Sources say that due to a shortage of stocks, prices are unlikely to fall significantly. Prices are expected to fall briefly and then rise again. However, the arrival of the new crop will begin in March-April.

Increased Sowing

Due to farmers receiving fair prices during the current season, there are reports of two to three times more Nigella seeds being sown in the major producing states of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. This is why prices are declining day by day. It is noteworthy that during the arrival of the new crop, the price of Nigella seeds in the markets was quoted at Rs. 170/180 per kg, which recently touched Rs. 250/260 per kg in the month of October.

Production

Although the production of Nigella seeds in the country was satisfactory during the current season, due to low outstanding stocks, the overall availability decreased, which led to a rise in prices. According to one estimate, the production of Nigella seeds at producing centers during the current season was estimated to be 2.50/2.75 lakh quintals, which was the same as in the year 2024. However, in the year 2024, the stock of Nigella seeds in the markets was approximately 1.25/1.50 lakh bags, which decreased to only 30/40 thousand bags in the year 2025.

Inflow

Due to the arrival of most of the total production in the markets, the current arrival in the markets has remained low. Arrivals at Neemuch Mandi in Madhya Pradesh have fallen to 400/500 bags, while those at Gondal Mandi in Gujarat have fallen to 40/50 bags. While the arrival of new goods was averaging 2500 bags at Gondal Mandi, the arrivals were 1000/1500 bags at Neemuch Mandi. Even during the current season, nigella production in Gujarat has been higher than last year, while production in Madhya Pradesh was considered lower.

Slow-Rise

Informed sources say that if the weather remains favorable for the crop after increased sowing, the price of nigella seeds could certainly reach ₹170/180 in March-April. Currently, prices in the markets are being quoted at ₹225/230 per kg, having reached ₹250/260 in October. Sources say that there are still about four months left for new goods to arrive, while stocks are still low. Consequently, prices are likely to rise again in the coming days as demand increases.
