No Likelihood of a Downtrend in Isabgol Prices

New Delhi. At present, isabgol (psyllium) prices are trading within a narrow range. However, sentiment remains bullish due to reports of weak sowing in major producing centers. It is noteworthy that on news of poor sowing, isabgol prices had risen by ₹12–15 per kg during November–December. But demand weakened at higher price levels, causing the upward move to stall. Market sources say that with the return of demand in the coming days, prices are likely to firm up again.

In Rajasthan, the major isabgol-producing state, sowing this year is reported to be only about 50 percent of last year’s level. Rajasthan accounts for around 70–75 percent of the country’s total isabgol production, while Gujarat contributes about 25–30 percent. According to data released by the Gujarat Agriculture Department, sowing had been completed over 23,257 hectares in the state as of December 29, compared with 24,560 hectares during the same period last year.

Production to decline: Based on sowing reports coming from producing centers, it is expected that isabgol production in the country will remain low for the second consecutive year. It may be recalled that in 2024, India’s isabgol output had fallen to around 3.8–4.0 million bags. Looking ahead, there are indications that the crop could be even smaller during the March–April harvest period.

No downside expected: Market sources believe there is little chance of a significant decline in isabgol prices at current levels. At present, prices in producing centers are being quoted in the range of ₹100–130 per kg, depending on quality. Trade estimates suggest that with the emergence of demand, prices could rise by ₹8–10 per kg in the coming days. It is worth noting that over the past two years, production has declined due to farmers not receiving remunerative prices for their produce.

Exports decline: Isabgol exports have declined during the first seven months of the current financial year 2025–26. Exports in October 2025 stood at 4,022.20 tonnes, compared with 5,741.10 tonnes in the same period last year. During April–October 2025, isabgol exports totaled 37,741.60 tonnes, lower than 38,725.80 tonnes exported during April–October 2024.
