Oil palm acreage increases in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad. During the current financial year, the national oil palm plantation area has increased by 52,113 hectares, with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh contributing significantly.
According to senior official sources, since the launch of the National Mission on Edible Oils - Oil Palm in August 2021, the area under palm plantations has increased by approximately 2.41 lakh hectares. With this, the total area under palm plantations nationally has reached close to 6 lakh hectares.
Union Agriculture Ministry officials say that oil palm cultivation is gradually gaining momentum. During the financial year 2025-26, between April 1 and October 22, 52,113 hectares of new palm plantations were planted.
Of this, 13,286 hectares were planted in Andhra Pradesh, while 12,005 hectares were planted in Telangana. Additionally, new oil palm plantations have been established in Goa, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat.
Farmers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are already attracted and enthusiastic about oil palm cultivation because of the good income it offers. Palm oil consumption is also increasing in these states.
Farmers there often intercrop palm plantations with cocoa and other crops, providing a dual income. However, the pace of establishing new plantations in the northeastern states has slowed somewhat.
