Pea prices in Canada expected to remain firm, supported by strong export demand

Winnipeg. Pea prices in Western Canadian markets have remained relatively stable within a specific range amidst subdued trading activity over the past few days. Harvesting is nearing completion. Unseasonal rains have initially impacted pea quality.

Currently, in Saskatchewan markets, standard-grade yellow peas are trading at $8.00 per bushel and green peas at $8.50 per bushel (FOB farm), while top-quality lots are quoted at $8.50 and $9.00 per bushel, respectively. Some buyers are also showing interest in purchasing Maple peas.

Chinese importers are purchasing Canadian peas, and buyers from India remain active as well. Total imports of Canadian peas by China are projected to exceed 1 million tonnes by 2026. While pea production in Canada is expected to drop sharply this season due to reduced acreage and adverse weather conditions, total availability is unlikely to see a significant decline, thanks to substantial carry-over stocks. The real issue lies in quality, which will determine export prospects and pricing.
