Positive Signs for Sugar Production

New Delhi. Sugarcane crushing and sugar production are in full swing across all producing states in the country. This includes top producing states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, as well as states with moderate production such as Gujarat,

Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, and states with limited production like Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.

Sugar mills are receiving sufficient quantities of sugarcane, allowing them to utilize their total crushing capacity to the fullest.

This year, not only is a significant increase expected in the average yield and total production of sugarcane, but an improvement in the average sugar recovery rate from sugarcane is also anticipated.

Initial indications support this. In Maharashtra, the average sugar recovery rate has improved from 8.20 percent last year to 8.52 percent this year.

By December 21st, the state had produced over 3.8 million tons of sugar, requiring the crushing of 44.6 million tons of sugarcane.

Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are also experiencing robust sugarcane crushing, resulting in higher sugar production compared to last year.

Sugar prices remain under pressure. The domestic free sale quota for sugar for January 2026 is expected to be announced in the next few days. If the quota is low or moderate, the pressure on millers may ease.
