Kochi. Producers and traders are getting relief due to sudden increase in the prices of coconut oil and copra since the beginning of the current month (September). In Kerala market,
the price of copra has increased by Rs. 20 to Rs. 122 per kg and the price of coconut oil has increased by Rs. 27 to Rs. 186 per kg.
On the other hand, in Tamil Nadu also, the price of copra has increased to Rs. 130 per kg and the price of coconut oil has jumped to Rs. 176.50 per kg.
According to the President of Cochin Oil Merchants Association (COMA), the prices may increase further due to the festive demand in North India.
The prices of whole coconut have also started to rise and strengthen. Within a fortnight, its price has jumped from Rs. 36 to a high of Rs. 62 per kg.
According to informed sources, the market is in a bullish-strong mood due to the recent increase in demand for tender coconut and the fall in production due to drought-like conditions prevailing in some parts of Karnataka. The supply of copra in Karnataka is decreasing, which is supporting the prices.
The price of ball copra (gola) has already reached a high of Rs 235 per kg due to festive demand, while it may increase further.
When its price was running at Rs 100-120 per kg in Karnataka, the producers were forced to convert it into milling copra to get higher prices.
