New Delhi. The apex industry body - Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) in its preliminary estimate has expressed the possibility of total domestic production of sugar increasing to 349 lakh tonnes during the 2025-26 marketing season (October-September), which is 18 percent or 54 lakh tonnes more than the estimated production of 295 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season. This is the production estimate before diversion to ethanol production.

According to the ISMA report, the total area of cane at the national level in the 2024-25 season is expected to reach 57.11 lakh hectares or slightly increased to 57.24 lakh hectares in the 2025-26 season.

Under this, the sugarcane production area is expected to increase by 8 percent from 13.82 lakh hectares to 14.95 lakh hectares in Maharashtra and by 6 percent from 6.40 lakh hectares to 6.76 lakh hectares in Karnataka, but the sugarcane area in Uttar Pradesh is likely to shrink from 23.30 lakh hectares to 22.57 lakh hectares. There may be a slight increase or decrease in the sugarcane sowing area in other producing states of the country.

As far as the gross production of sugar (before diversion) is concerned, its figure is estimated to improve from 100.74 lakh tonnes to 102.53 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024-25 season,

jump 42 percent from 93.34 lakh tonnes to 132.68 lakh tonnes in Maharashtra and increase 23 percent from 53.68 lakh tonnes to 66.19 lakh tonnes in Karnataka. The new marketing of sugarcane crushing and sugar production will formally start in October 2025.

According to the ISMA report, this time the weather and monsoon conditions are favorable for the sugarcane crop, due to which there is a strong possibility of improvement in its average yield rate and quality.

Along with this, there is also a good increase in the average recovery rate of sugar from sugarcane, which had decreased significantly in the 2024-25 season.
