Ottawa. Statistics (Stats Can), a subordinate agency of the Government of Canada, on September 16 released the model-based production estimates of various crops for the current marketing season of 2020-25.
Under this, a spectacular increase in the production of peas, lentils and Kabuli gram has been predicted as compared to the 2023-24 season.
According to the latest report of Stats Can, in Canada, the production of peas in 2024 is expected to improve by 21 percent from 26.09 lakh tonnes to 31.60 lakh tonnes as compared to the year 2023, the production of lentils is expected to increase by 44 percent from 18.01 lakh tonnes to 25.93 lakh tonnes and the production of gram (Kabuli) is expected to jump 106 percent from 1.59 lakh tonnes to 3.27 lakh tonnes.
Earlier, the production of 1.46 lakh tonnes of chickpeas, 34.23 lakh tonnes of peas and 23.31 lakh tonnes of lentils was estimated during the year 2022.
Earlier, the data presented by StatsCan while estimating the production of pulses on the basis of survey is largely equal to the model based production estimate.
Model based production estimate is considered to be closer to reality. Due to better production, the supply and availability of pulses in Canada will remain good and its exportable stock will increase.
However, this time Canada will have to face a tough challenge from Australia, Russia and America in the global export market of pulses.
