Pulses Mission will be effective for crop diversification in Punjab

The Pulses Mission is a significant step towards improving crop diversification in Punjab and other regions that have traditionally focused on paddy and wheat cultivation. With the allocation of Rs 1000 crore by the Union Finance Minister in the General Budget,

the mission aims to reduce the over-reliance on water-intensive crops like paddy and wheat, addressing critical issues like water depletion, soil health deterioration, and environmental damage.

Punjab, in particular, has witnessed a shift toward monoculture farming, focusing mainly on wheat and paddy, which occupies nearly 90% of the cultivable land. This has led to the depletion of groundwater levels and a reduction in soil fertility.

Furthermore, the rise in environmental degradation underscores the need for diversification into crops like pulses and oilseeds. These crops are less water-intensive and can help improve soil health by fixing nitrogen in the soil.

The government’s initiative, which guarantees the purchase of pulses at a minimum support price (MSP) for the next four years, is crucial in attracting farmers to grow pulses like Tuvar, Urad, and Masur.

Pulses, traditionally less popular due to price volatility and inconsistent government support, are now offered greater financial stability under the Pulses Mission.

This should incentivize farmers, especially in Punjab and Haryana, to shift some portion of their land from paddy and wheat to pulses.

The growing focus on pulses is essential for enhancing the country's self-sufficiency in pulse production, which has lagged behind the domestic demand for years.

By reducing the area allocated to paddy and wheat and incorporating pulses into crop rotation, Punjab and Haryana can play a key role in addressing both the environmental challenges and the gap in pulse production.

In conclusion, the Pulses Mission not only supports sustainable farming practices but also offers economic opportunities to farmers by ensuring government-backed procurement of pulses.

It promises to reduce the heavy reliance on wheat and paddy, contributing to crop diversification, better income for farmers, and increased domestic production of pulses.
