Rabi Crop Acreage Reaches 306 Lakh Hectares

New Delhi. This year, the area under Rabi crops is witnessing a significant increase, driven by favorable weather and adequate availability of agricultural resources. Acreage under wheat, paddy, pulses, oilseeds, and coarse grains is all ahead of last year.

The latest weekly data from the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that the total area under Rabi crops has increased to 306.31 lakh hectares as of November 21st this year, representing an increase of 33.53 lakh hectares from the 272.78 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.

It is worth noting that the normal average area under Rabi crops for the current Rabi season is estimated at 637.81 lakh hectares.

According to official data, during the current Rabi season, the area under wheat, the most important food grain, jumped from 107.09 lakh hectares to 128.37 lakh hectares compared to last year.

The area under paddy production improved from 7.59 lakh hectares to 8.26 lakh hectares, and the area under pulses increased from 68.15 lakh hectares to 73.36 lakh hectares.

Similarly, the area under coarse grains improved from 17.26 lakh hectares to 19.69 lakh hectares, and the area under oilseeds increased from 72.69 lakh hectares to 76.64 lakh hectares.

Among pulse crops, the area under gram, lentils, peas, and horse gram is ahead of last year, while the area under black gram, green gram, and khesari is lagging behind. Similarly, in the coarse grains/coarse grains category, the area under ragi, along with maize, barley, and sorghum, is also ahead of last year.

Among oilseed crops, mustard acreage has increased significantly, but peanut and linseed acreage are declining. Vigorous sowing campaigns for all Rabi crops are currently underway and will continue into December. The ideal time for wheat sowing is coming to an end in Punjab and Haryana.
