The sowing of Rabi crops in Gujarat has been significantly slower than last year, with the total sowing area reported to be 7.69 lakh hectares as of November 18, 2024. This represents a shortfall of about 4.08 lakh hectares compared to the same period last year, when the sowing area had reached 11.77 lakh hectares. Additionally, the current sowing area is just 16.7% of the normal average area for Rabi crops in the state, which is 46.07 lakh hectares.

Several categories of crops have seen a decline in their sowing areas:

  1. Cereal Crops:

    • Wheat: Sowing area decreased sharply from 1.88 lakh hectares last year to just 94 thousand hectares.
    • Sorghum: Dropped from 15 thousand hectares to 4 thousand hectares.
    • Maize: Fell from 26 thousand hectares to 18 thousand hectares.
    • Other cereals: Dropped from 3 thousand hectares to 2 thousand hectares.
    • Overall: The total sowing area for cereals has halved, from 2.31 lakh hectares last year to only 1.18 lakh hectares this season.
  2. Pulses:

    • Total area: Decreased from 2.14 lakh hectares last year to 1.93 lakh hectares.
    • Gram: The sowing area for gram dropped from 1.86 lakh hectares to 1.32 lakh hectares.
    • However, the area for other pulses saw an increase, rising from 28 thousand hectares to 61 thousand hectares.
  3. Oilseeds:

    • The sowing area for oilseeds has sharply decreased, from 1.66 lakh hectares to 79 thousand hectares.
    • Mustard: The sowing area fell from 1.66 lakh hectares to 78 thousand hectares.
    • On the other hand, the area for other oilseeds increased slightly, from 88 hectares to 962 hectares.
  4. Spice Crops:

    • Cumin: Saw a large reduction in sowing area, from 88,696 hectares to 17,687 hectares.
    • Coriander: Dropped from 35,754 hectares to 16,940 hectares.
    • Sawa: A drastic decline from 6,314 hectares to just 110 hectares.
    • Fennel: Reduced from 32,452 hectares to 1,381 hectares.
    • However, the sowing area for garlic increased from 3,196 hectares to 5,360 hectares, and Isabgol saw a notable increase from 591 hectares to 1,819 hectares.
  5. Other Crops:

    • The sowing area for sugarcane dropped from 91 thousand hectares to 76 thousand hectares.
    • The area for onion increased slightly from 23 thousand hectares to 27 thousand hectares.

The decline in sowing area across many major crops could be attributed to several factors, including weather patterns, water availability, and possibly the shift to alternative crops. Despite the slow start to the Rabi season, there is still hope that the sowing pace could increase as the season progresses.
