Rabi Crop Sowing Area Reaches 614.30 Lakh Hectares

New Delhi. Sowing of Rabi crops has been completed in most parts of the country, while in other areas it has reached its final stage. During the last week, Rabi crops were sown in approximately 33 lakh hectares, increasing the total sown area to 614.30 lakh hectares.
This is 6.87 lakh hectares more than the 607.43 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year and represents about 96 percent of the five-year average area of 637.81 lakh hectares.
Compared to last year, the Rabi crop sowing area was 1.4 percent ahead in the week ending December 19, which decreased to 1.1 percent in the week ending December 26.
Last year, the production of wheat and some other Rabi crops reached new record levels, and similar expectations are being expressed this year as well.
According to official data, the wheat sowing area during the current Rabi season improved from 322.49 lakh hectares to 322.68 lakh hectares compared to last year.
This is more than the five-year average area of 312.35 lakh hectares but slightly less than the total area of 328.04 lakh hectares in the last season.
Similarly, during the period under review, the sowing area for pulses increased by 3 percent from 129.79 lakh hectares to 133.44 lakh hectares, the sowing area for oilseeds improved by 1.1 percent from 93.25 lakh hectares to 94.29 lakh hectares, the area under paddy jumped by 14.5 percent from 13.01 lakh hectares to 14.90 lakh hectares,
and the sowing area for coarse grains improved from 48.89 lakh hectares to 49 lakh hectares. In the coarse grains category, the area under maize and barley has increased significantly, but the sowing area for sorghum is lagging considerably.
There has been a good increase in the sowing of pulses, particularly chickpeas and lentils, and oilseed crops, especially mustard. Scattered sowing of other Rabi crops is still underway.
