The recent data indicates a positive trend in the sowing area of pulse crops during the current Rabi season, signaling a good increase in production. Key signs of this improvement include:
Increase in Area Under Gram (Chickpea): The area under gram cultivation has increased significantly from 74.40 lakh hectares last year to 78.52 lakh hectares. This is an encouraging sign, as gram is a major pulse crop in India.
Growth in Lentil and Pea Sowing: The area under lentils has risen from 12.80 lakh hectares to 13.45 lakh hectares, and the sowing of peas has also seen an improvement, increasing from 7.43 lakh hectares to 7.54 lakh hectares.
Overall Increase in Pulse Area: The total area under pulse crops in the Rabi season has grown from 105 lakh hectares last year to 109 lakh hectares this year, although it is still below the normal average of 140.44 lakh hectares. However, this increase is a positive sign of recovery in pulse production.
Improvement in Other Pulses: While some pulses like Kulthi, Urad, Moong, and Khesari are lagging behind compared to last year, the overall area under other pulses has risen from 2.28 lakh hectares to 2.64 lakh hectares. This may be indicative of future growth as conditions improve.
High Market Prices of Gram: The price of gram remains high, which could further incentivize farmers to increase sowing in the coming days, contributing to overall growth in pulse production.
Despite certain areas lagging behind last year, the overall trend indicates that pulse cultivation is on an upward trajectory during this Rabi season, and improvements are expected in the coming weeks.
