Signs of increase in production of fine variety rice in Telangana

The increase in the production of fine variety rice in Telangana is evident from several key signs and factors:

  1. Government Incentives: The Telangana government's decision to provide an additional bonus of Rs 500 per quintal over the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2320 per quintal for fine variety paddy has significantly incentivized farmers to switch to cultivating fine varieties. This policy has boosted enthusiasm among farmers to grow this type of paddy, which is now more profitable due to the additional bonus.

  2. Growth in Area Under Fine Variety Paddy: There has been a dramatic 61% increase in the area under fine variety paddy, rising from 25.05 lakh acres last year to 40.44 lakh acres in 2024. This sharp rise indicates that farmers are shifting from cultivating other varieties of paddy to the fine variety, attracted by higher prices and better government support.

  3. Shift from General Variety to Fine Variety: The share of fine variety paddy in the total area under paddy cultivation has grown from 38% to 61%, which is a significant change. In contrast, the area under general variety (non-fine variety) paddy has decreased from 40.89 lakh acres to 26.33 lakh acres. This shift reflects the growing preference for fine variety due to the better economic returns associated with it.

  4. Favorable Weather Conditions: The weather and monsoon conditions have been favorable for the cultivation of paddy, which has contributed to the expected increase in production. Good rainfall and suitable climatic conditions for rice cultivation are vital for maximizing yields, especially for the more sensitive fine varieties.

  5. Rising Procurement and Purchase Trends: The Civil Supply Department's plan to procure 80 lakh tons of food grains, including fine variety paddy, indicates an organized effort to purchase more from farmers. Although the pace of procurement was slow earlier due to high market prices, it has picked up since the first week of November, with 9.58 lakh tons purchased as of November 14. Of this, 2.09 lakh tons were of fine variety paddy, showing a healthy share of fine rice in the total procurement.

  6. Overall Increase in Paddy Production: The total area under paddy cultivation has also increased slightly, from 65.94 lakh acres last year to 66.77 lakh acres this year, which is expected to yield higher production figures. The overall production of paddy in the state is projected to rise from 146 lakh tons to 158 lakh tons, further reflecting the positive trends in agricultural output.

In summary, the combination of favorable government incentives, shifts in farming practices toward higher-value fine variety paddy, and favorable climatic conditions, along with growing procurement activity, signals a significant increase in the production of fine variety rice in Telangana.
