Soybean sowing speeds up in Mato Grosso do Sul

Paranagua. In Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil's third largest soybean producing state, the sowing area of this important oilseed crop has increased to 16 percent, which is almost double the area of 8.6 percent during the same period last year.
It is worth mentioning that soybean sowing is late in this province located in the southern part of Brazil. Sowing has been completed in 22 percent area in the southern part of the state, while 7.2 percent in the central part and only 1 percent in the northern region has been reported.
In the southern part of the state, there is sufficient moisture in the soil of the fields for sowing soybean, but some shortage of it is being observed in the northern part.
During the 2024-25 season, the soybean production area in the Mato Grosso do Sul province is estimated to increase by 6.8 percent to 45.01 lakh hectares or 111 lakh acres as compared to the 2023-24 season.
The average soybean yield rate there is expected to be 51.7 sacks (each sack of 60 kg) per hectare or 46.2 bushels per acre, which is almost equal to the average yield rate of the last five years.
Based on this, the total soybean production in the state is estimated to increase to 139 lakh tonnes during the 2024-25 season.
Usually, soybean sowing starts in the month of September in both the top producing states of Brazil - Mato Grosso and Parana, whereas in Mato Grosso do Sul it starts in October and ends by the end of November.
Traditionally, 70 percent of soybean sowing is done in this state between October 18 and November 8.
