India’s spice exports in the financial year 2023-24 have shown remarkable growth, reflecting strong demand for its high-quality spices in international markets. According to data from the Spices Board, a total of 15,39,692 tonnes of spices and spice products were exported, with a value of Rs 36,958.80 crore (around $4.46 billion). This marks a significant increase in both export quantity and value.

Key highlights include:

  1. Red Chilli Export Surge: The export of red chilli saw a 15% growth, reaching a new record of $1.50 billion (from $1.30 billion in 2022-23). China and Bangladesh were major importers, with China alone importing 1.79 lakh tonnes worth Rs 4,123 crore. Red chilli now constitutes 34% of the total spice export value, underscoring its importance in India's spice trade.

  2. Growth in Other Spices: The export of other key spices, such as black pepper, cardamom, and turmeric, also showed positive growth. These spices have been in high demand, contributing to the overall increase in exports.

  3. Spices Board’s Initiatives: To further boost exports, the Spices Board launched a transformative scheme aimed at increasing the export of whole spices and value-added spice products. Another initiative is focused on enhancing the productivity of cardamom cultivation and improving the quality of spices post-harvest, which is expected to meet international standards and fuel demand.

  4. Future Outlook: According to the chairman of the World Spice Organization (WSO), India's spice exports are projected to reach $10 billion by 2030, driven by high growth rates and increasing international demand.

  5. Diverse Spice Exports: India continues to export more than 80 varieties of spices to over 100 countries. Major exports include red chilli, cumin, coriander, black pepper, turmeric, cardamom, garlic, and nutmeg-mace. The global appeal of these products is growing due to their consistent quality and India’s ability to meet the demand.

This continued growth in spice exports is not only a testament to the quality of Indian spices but also reflects the country’s strategic efforts to enhance its presence in international markets. With new initiatives and increasing global interest, India’s spice industry is poised for further success in the coming years.
