Sugar Import Quota May Be Surrendered by November 15

New Delhi. On August 20, 2026, the Central Government issued a notification allowing Indian millers and refiners to import 1 million tonnes of raw sugar duty-free from abroad under the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) system, with the deadline set for October 31, 2026. The timeline for these imports has now been extended until December 31, 2026; an official notification to this effect was issued on October 19.

On the same day—October 19—the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued another notification stating that millers or refiners who are unable or unwilling to import their allocated quota of sugar may surrender it to the government by November 15, 2026, in accordance with the prescribed rules.

To surrender the quota, millers/refiners are required to pay an amount equivalent to 0.5 percent of the CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value of the total quantity of sugar being surrendered. This condition has already been established. All other terms and conditions regarding the surrender of the quota remain unchanged.
