Total import of edible oils reached 145.36 lakh tonnes till September

Mumbai. During the first 11 months of the current marketing season i.e. from November 2023 to September 2024, a total of about 145.36 lakh tonnes of edible oil was imported in the country, which was 9.33 lakh tonnes less than the import of 154.69 lakh tonnes during the same period of the 2022-23 season.

Under this, the import of refined edible oil fell from 20.53 lakh tonnes to 16.95 lakh tonnes and the import of crude edible oils fell from 134.16 lakh tonnes to 128.41 lakh tonnes. The data for October is yet to come.

It is noteworthy that during the entire marketing season of 2022-23 (November-October), the total import of edible oils in the country jumped sharply to an all-time high of 164.66 lakh tonnes, which included import of 21.07 lakh tonnes of refined oil and 143.59 lakh tonnes of crude edible oil.

Earlier, 140.30 lakh tonnes of edible oil was ordered in 2021-22, 131.32 lakh tonnes in 2020-21 and 131.75 lakh tonnes in the marketing season of 2019-20.

In September 2024, a total of 10.64 lakh tonnes of edible oil was ordered with 84 thousand tonnes of refined and 9.80 lakh tonnes of crude oil, which was the lowest since February.

Edible oil was imported in August at 15.36 lakh tonnes, highest 18.40 lakh tonnes in July, 15.27 lakh tonnes in June, 14.98 lakh tonnes in May, 13.04 lakh tonnes in April and 11.50 lakh tonnes in March.

In September 2024, 5.27 lakh tonnes of palm oil, 3.84 lakh tonnes of soybean oil and 1.53 lakh tonnes of sunflower oil were imported.

With this, a total of 145.36 lakh tonnes of edible oil was imported during the period November 2023-September 2024, including 81.70 lakh tonnes of palm oil, 30.99 lakh tonnes of soybean oil and 32.67 lakh tonnes of sunflower oil.
