Mumbai. Although in the current financial year (2024-25) in India, during the first four months i.e. April-July 2024, the import of tur increased to 2,75,393 tonnes, which was about 60 percent more than the import of 172448 tonnes in the same period last year,

but during the entire financial year, its total import is likely to decrease from about 10 lakh tonnes last year to around 8 lakh tonnes this time. Sowing of tur crop has been completed in Myanmar and its harvesting will start in January 2025.

The stock of tur there is likely to decrease to 25-30 thousand tonnes because most of the marketing season has passed and the export performance was also better.

According to unconfirmed reports, the Mozambique government has fixed the minimum export price (MAP) of tur at $1100-1150 per tonne, but it has not been officially confirmed yet.

If this high MAP is fixed, then the producers there will get better returns. It is known that Mozambique is the largest producer and exporter of tur in the African continent.

In the domestic division, the sowing area of tur has increased by 5.81 lakh hectares from 40.74 lakh hectares last year to 46.55 lakh hectares this time,

but there is a possibility of some damage to its crop due to heavy rains and floods in both the top producing states - Karnataka and Maharashtra as well as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

The central government has estimated the domestic production of tur to increase by 1.05 lakh tonnes from 33.12 lakh tonnes in the 2022-23 season to 34.17 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season.

Industry and trade sector analysts believe that if the weather remains favorable in the coming months and no unforeseen natural calamity occurs,

then the production of tur can increase to 40-42 lakh tonnes in the current season of 2024-25. On the other hand,

the government is confident that this time its total production will reach 45-46 lakh tonnes, which will reduce the need for its import from abroad.
