Urad prices in the domestic market continue to trend upwards due to sustained buying by dal mills. Prices for Urad imported from Burma—specifically FAQ and SQ varieties—have also strengthened.
For October and November shipments, Urad FAQ prices have risen by $15 to approximately $945 per tonne (C&F), while SQ Urad prices have increased to $1,025 per tonne (C&F). In Chennai, Urad prices have shifted from steady to firm.
Rising demand from dal mills in the domestic market has bolstered Urad prices; however, at these higher rates, mill buying is largely restricted to immediate requirements. Market experts suggest that if the price rally continues, profit-booking could occur at certain levels. On the other hand, provided weather conditions remain favorable, arrivals of the new domestic Urad crop are expected to increase in the markets of major producing states in the coming days.
Nevertheless, demand for Urad dal is likely to remain strong over the next two months due to the festive season. Given the robust demand, limited selling, and rising prices of imported Urad, the possibility of further price increases in the near future cannot be ruled out.
