U.S. Tariffs Raise Concerns in the Spice Market
★ Recently, the U.S. government imposed a 25% tariff on Indian products, raising concerns across several industries, particularly the spice sector.
★ The U.S. is a key importer of Indian black pepper, turmeric, ginger, and cumin.
★ The imposition of import duties is expected to increase export costs.
★ Participation from other exporting countries like Vietnam and Indonesia may rise.
★ According to the Spices Board of India, the U.S. is the second-largest importer of Indian spices.
★ In 2024–25, annual spice exports stood at 126,000 tonnes, compared to 114,000 tonnes in 2023–24.
★ A 25% tariff has been imposed on Indian black pepper, while Indonesian black pepper faces a 19% tariff.
★ Moreover, Vietnamese black pepper is already cheaper than Indian black pepper.
