Prices of small lentils continue to rise as demand remains strong

Mumbai. The bullish trend in the lentil market has continued this week as well. Particularly, a tremendous jump has been seen in the prices of small lentils. At present, the stock of small lentils in the market is already weak. In such a situation, as soon as the dal millers and stockists started buying keeping in mind the upcoming demand, a sudden jump was recorded in the prices. In recent weeks, due to domestic consumption, preparations for the festive season and buying from bulk buyers, there has been a strong demand for lentils. This demand is much more than the supply, which is supporting the rising prices. The harvesting of the new lentil crop in Canada is near, which weakened the demand for old stocks. Red lentil prices remained stable at 28–29 cents / lb, while green lentils softened. Pressure is increasing on small green lentils as sowing and yield have increased, but demand remains weak. Concerns about the quality of lentils have increased due to the possibility of heavy rains. In India, 10% customs duty is applicable on lentil imports.
