Wheat prices rise due to normal arrivals and strong buying interest
New Delhi: The government procurement drive for wheat for the central pool has concluded, and supplies in the wholesale markets of major producing states remain normal. The central government has set a higher minimum base price for wheat to be sold under the OMSS (Open Market Sale Scheme), although the quantity and dates for the sale have not yet been announced. Uncertainty regarding the availability of government stocks has increased the interest of millers and processors in purchasing wheat from wholesale markets; consequently, wheat prices saw a significant rise in major markets across the country—with the exception of Indore and Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh—during the week of June 27 to July 3.
Delhi
During the week under review, wheat prices in Delhi rose by ₹95 to reach ₹2,780–₹2,800 per quintal, while in Rajkot, they increased by ₹100 to ₹2,300–₹2,900 per quintal. However, prices declined by ₹150 in Indore (to ₹2,500–₹2,730 per quintal) and by ₹75 in Ujjain (to ₹2,400–₹2,725 per quintal).
Rajasthan
In Rajasthan, the markets in Kota and Baran remained quiet, but prices in Bundi improved by ₹50. An upward trend was observed in most markets across Uttar Pradesh; Etah saw an increase of ₹150.
Arrivals
Since government wheat will prove costlier for millers, prices in wholesale markets may see further improvement. An average daily arrival of 5,000–6,000 bags of wheat was recorded in Delhi.
