Wheat prices remained stable amid negligible trading
New Delhi. The wheat market remained quiet during the week of October 18-24, as flour millers, processors, and traders and stockists were on holiday.
Trade
Wheat prices remained unchanged in almost all major markets amid negligible trading. Only in Delhi did it improve by Rs. 5 to Rs. 2810/2830 per quintal.
Gujarat/Maharashtra
Wheat prices remained unchanged in major markets like Rajkot in Gujarat, Indore-Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan, and Shahjahanpur-Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. Jalna market in Maharashtra also remained quiet. Limited wheat arrivals were observed in the markets, and the pace of Kharif season sales remained slow.
Madhya Pradesh
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced plans to purchase wheat from farmers at a rate of ₹2,700 per quintal in the 2026 Rabi marketing season, which could encourage farmers to increase their sowing area and production of this important food grain.
MSP
The central government has already increased the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat by ₹160 from ₹2,425 per quintal in 2024-25 to ₹2,585 per quintal for the 2025-26 season, which could maintain farmers' enthusiasm and interest in wheat cultivation. Weather conditions are favorable, and the soil is sufficiently moist, ensuring farmers will not face any difficulties in sowing.
Water Availability
There is abundant water available in dams and reservoirs, which will be useful for irrigating crops in the future. However, in some other states, including Rajasthan, wheat may face stiff competition from mustard and gram.
Sowing
The wheat sowing season has begun. The government has sufficient stocks and, due to soft domestic market prices, does not feel the need to sell wheat from its stocks under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS). Strict storage limits are also in place, which is putting pressure on the market.
