Wheat Production Expected to be Excellent Once Again

New Delhi. Initial estimates projected a significant increase in the area sown with wheat, the most important food grain of the Rabi season, due to a substantial increase in its Minimum Support Price (MSP) and favorable weather conditions.
While the increase in the sown area was considerable in the initial stages, the gap has now narrowed significantly.
According to official data, the area under wheat cultivation at the national level was recorded at 322.68 lakh hectares as of December 20, 2025, which is only 19,000 hectares more than the 322.49 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.
While the wheat acreage has already surpassed the five-year average of 312.35 lakh hectares by more than 10 lakh hectares, it is still considerably behind the record sowing area of 328.04 lakh hectares achieved during the 2024-25 Rabi season. Sowing has been completed in most areas, but scattered sowing is still underway in some regions.
The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat has been increased by Rs. 160 per quintal, from Rs. 2425 per quintal for the 2024-25 season to Rs. 2585 per quintal for the 2025-26 season.
Similar to paddy, the government procures a substantial quantity of wheat for the central pool. This assures farmers of a market for their produce.
This year, some states have witnessed a good increase in the area under wheat cultivation, and if the weather remains favorable in the coming months, an excellent harvest is expected in those regions.
