Wheat – Rabi Sowing Data: The Picture Is Gradually Becoming Clear
The rabi sowing scenario is now beginning to indicate which way things may eventually turn. While the pace of sowing was quite rapid at the start of the season, it now appears to be normalising with the passage of time.
According to official data, the normal wheat acreage stands at 31.235 million hectares. In the previous rabi season 2024–25, total wheat sowing had increased to 32.804 million hectares. In the ongoing rabi season 2025–26, wheat sowing has so far reached 32.268 million hectares, marginally higher by just 0.019 million hectares compared with 32.249 million hectares recorded during the same period last year. These figures are noteworthy.
This year witnessed a good monsoon along with firm wheat prices, which clearly supported strong sowing momentum in the initial phase. However, as the season progresses and official data continues to emerge, the actual sowing position is becoming clearer.
It is important to note that this trend is not limited to wheat alone. Sowing data for other rabi crops is also gradually changing, with the initial surge giving way to a more balanced pace.
For this reason, IGRAIN INDIA refrains from drawing early conclusions based solely on preliminary sowing figures. In our view, it takes time for sowing data to fully stabilise, and the final picture emerges only gradually.
In the coming weeks, as the rabi season advances further, greater clarity is expected regarding production prospects and market direction.
It may be possible to sense which way the camel is likely to turn, but one must remember a camel remains a camel.
