New Delhi. Given the growing interest of farmers in sowing wheat, the most important food grain of the Rabi season, it is expected that its gross production area may reach a new record level this year. Last year, acreage improved and weather conditions were favorable.

Based on this, the Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated that total domestic wheat production will reach an all-time high of 1179 lakh tonnes in the Rabi season of 2024-25. Furthermore, the wheat production target for the current Rabi season of 2025-26 has also been increased to 1190 lakh tonnes. A vigorous wheat sowing campaign is currently underway.

According to official data, the gross wheat area under cultivation during the current Rabi season, as of November 21, 2025, has jumped to 128.37 lakh hectares, an increase of 21.28 lakh hectares from the sown area of 107.09 lakh hectares during the same period last year. The five-year average area under cultivation for wheat this year is estimated at 312.35 lakh hectares.

Wheat sowing has either completed or is in its final stages in Punjab and Haryana. Sowing is progressing rapidly in western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, while sowing has begun in other producing states, including eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra, and is expected to pick up pace soon.

A robust wheat sowing is expected during December. Weather conditions remain favorable. Although the wholesale market price of wheat is not very attractive to farmers, the government support price is encouraging. The support price for wheat has been increased from Rs. 2425 per quintal to Rs. 2585 per quintal.
