Yellow peas boost pulse imports in April-October

New Delhi. Although imports of Desi gram, lentils, and pigeon pea declined during the first seven months of the current financial year compared to the same period last year, and imports of black gram also saw a modest increase,
the strong import of yellow peas led to an increase of 5.5 lakh tonnes in total pulse imports. A 30 percent import duty is now applicable on yellow peas.
According to data compiled by iGrain India, India's total pulse imports increased by 5.52 lakh tonnes to 29.74 lakh tonnes during April-October 2025, compared to April-October 2024.
Under this, the import of Desi gram fell by 38 thousand tonnes from 1.51 lakh tonnes to 1.13 lakh tonnes, import of lentils fell by 1.89 lakh tonnes from 5.00 lakh tonnes to 3.11 lakh tonnes and import of tur fell from 8.14 lakh tonnes to 6.96 lakh tonnes.
A decline of 1.18 lakh tonnes was recorded in the import of tur. On the other hand, during the period under review, import of urad increased by 48 thousand tonnes from 4.72 lakh tonnes to 5.20 lakh tonnes and import of yellow peas jumped from 4.85 lakh tonnes to 8.49 lakh tonnes to 13.34 lakh tonnes.
It is noteworthy that during the entire period (April-March) of the financial year 2024-25, the total import of pulses in India jumped to an all-time high of 69.32 lakh tonnes, which included import of 21.64 lakh tonnes of yellow peas,
15.06 lakh tonnes of Desi gram, 12.23 lakh tonnes of tur, 12.19 lakh tonnes of lentils and 8.20 lakh tonnes of urad, but it did not include the import of pulses like kidney beans, cowpea and chickpea.
