Chandigarh. Punjab, the top contributor of food grains to the central pool, is expected to receive 125 lakh tonnes of wheat in its mandis during the current Rabi marketing season.
According to the state’s Food and Supplies Minister, by April 19, around 13.16 lakh tonnes had arrived, of which nearly 11 lakh tonnes were procured.
Wheat supply has picked up rapidly since April 15, especially in Sangrur district, where mandis are overcrowded.
The limited space—just 7–8 acres—is causing unloading delays, with some farmers forced to offload wheat on roads, risking spoilage or theft in bad weather.
So far, Rs. 703 crore has been credited to farmers' accounts for purchased wheat, with payments being made within 24 hours. The lifting process is reported to be on schedule.
In Sangrur alone, 2.73 lakh tonnes had arrived and 2.36 lakh tonnes were procured, with Rs. 209 crore paid to farmers.
The government has ensured no shortage of gunny bags, and arrangements like tarpaulins and crates have been made to protect grain stock.
Officers have been strictly instructed to prevent any delays or negligence in the procurement process. If the weather stays favorable, wheat quality is expected to be excellent.
