Chandigarh. Wheat arrivals are picking up pace in Punjab’s Mandis, with the state government projecting a total arrival of 125 lakh tonnes during the ongoing Rabi marketing season.
The Union Food Ministry has set the same target for procurement from Punjab, the leading contributor of food grains to the central pool.
According to Punjab’s Food and Supplies Minister, 13.16 lakh tonnes of wheat have already reached the Mandis so far, with 11 lakh tonnes purchased. Payments worth ₹705 crore have been credited to farmers’ accounts within 24 hours of procurement.
Efforts are underway to ensure smooth and safe procurement. Tarpaulins, crates, and gunny bags are in adequate supply, and wheat lifting from Mandis is proceeding without delay.
With favorable weather, the wheat quality is expected to be excellent. The government is also freeing up warehouse space by moving old stock to other states. Procurement in the state will continue till May 15, 2025.
