Jaipur. During May and June, the arrival of mustard in the main wholesale markets of major producing states decreased compared to March and April.
Due to market prices remaining above the minimum support price (MSP), government agencies had minimal success in procurement.
According to data compiled by Anil Chatar, Managing Director of Marudhar Trading Agency in Jaipur’s Chandpole grain market, a total of 60.25 lakh tonnes of mustard arrived at wholesale markets and government procurement centers during the first four months of the current Rabi marketing season (March–June 2025). Out of this, only 9.75 lakh tonnes were purchased by government agencies. This includes 50 thousand tonnes in March, 9 lakh tonnes in April, 25 thousand tonnes in May, and none in June.
As per the firm, NAFED/HAFED had 7 lakh tonnes of old stock, which increased to 16.75 lakh tonnes after this year’s purchase of 9.75 lakh tonnes. After selling 2.50 lakh tonnes, the remaining stock as of 1 July 2025 was 14.25 lakh tonnes.
In wholesale markets, 14.50 lakh tonnes of mustard arrived in March, 15 lakh tonnes in April, 11 lakh tonnes in May, and 10 lakh tonnes in June. Of this, 46.25 lakh tonnes were crushed — 11.50 lakh tonnes in March, 13 lakh tonnes in April, 10.50 lakh tonnes in May, and 11.25 lakh tonnes in June.
According to Marudhar Trading Agency, there was an outstanding stock of 1 lakh tonnes on March 1, while the production during the current season is estimated at 109.25 lakh tonnes.
Out of this, 60.25 lakh tonnes reached the mandis and about 50 lakh tonnes are estimated to be held by farmers. In addition, 14.25 lakh tonnes are with government agencies and 7.75 lakh tonnes with millers, processors, and traders. Thus, the total mustard stock available in the country on 1 July 2025 was estimated at 72 lakh tonnes.
During the Rabi marketing season of 2024–25, total domestic mustard production was estimated at 111.25 lakh tonnes — including 51 lakh tonnes from Rajasthan, 15 lakh tonnes from Uttar Pradesh, 12.50 lakh tonnes from Haryana and Punjab, 13.50 lakh tonnes from Madhya Pradesh, 4.75 lakh tonnes from Gujarat,
and 14.50 lakh tonnes from other states like West Bengal and Bihar. Out of this, 2 lakh tonnes arrived in February, and 109.25 lakh tonnes are estimated to have arrived since March. Mustard sowing is scheduled to begin from October–November.
