Melbourne: Australia exported a total of 5,69,119 tonnes of lentils during the December 2024 to February 2025 quarter, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This marks a decline compared to last season due to reduced stock and lower demand, especially from key markets like India.

Exports stood at 2,50,655 tonnes in December, fell to 1,69,353 tonnes in January, and further dropped to 1,49,111 tonnes in February.

Of this, India imported 2,51,163 tonnes in the quarter, including 1,09,428 tonnes in December82,471 tonnes in January, and 59,264 tonnes in February. March exports to India were estimated at just 21,000 tonnes, mostly under the concessional duty quota.

Besides India, Australia shipped 2.08 lakh tonnes to Bangladesh45,000 tonnes to Sri Lanka26,000 tonnes to UAE15,000 tonnes to Pakistan, and 12,000 tonnes to Nepal.

Smaller volumes were exported to various other countries including JapanItalyMauritius, and Thailand.

With fresh domestic lentil arrivals and an 11% import duty now in place, India's import demand is expected to stay weak in the coming months, impacting further Australian exports.
