Australia has been making significant strides in the export of both gram and lentils. In December 2024, it exported a total of 10.21 lakh tonnes of these pulses, with 7.81 lakh tonnes of gram and 2.40 lakh tonnes of lentils.

The demand for gram, particularly in India, has surged, and the production of gram in Australia has seen a notable increase.

As per the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the country's total gram export for the October-December 2024 quarter reached a high of 12.97 lakh tonnes, with exports increasing sharply each month during this period.

In addition, India was a major importer of both gram and lentils from Australia during this quarter. The import of gram saw a significant jump, from 78,000 tonnes in October to 5.89 lakh tonnes in December.

In terms of lentils, India also led imports, though in smaller quantities compared to gram. The ABS report noted that India imported 1.32 lakh tonnes of lentils in December alone.

With the extension of the deadline for duty-free imports of gram until March 31, 2025, the importers in India are taking full advantage of the opportunity, resulting in a continued rise in imports from Australia.
