Brisbane. Based on the increase in the sown area and the increase in the yield rate due to favorable weather, the gram production in Australia is expected to increase rapidly during the 2024-25 season and reach the highest level in the last decade.
A new report by the government agency Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARES) said that during the 2024-25 season, the sown area of gram in the country increased to 19 lakh acres, while its total production is expected to jump to 13.33 lakh tonnes,
which is 70 percent more than the ten-year average production. This sown area is the largest since 2017-18 and this estimated production is the highest since the 2016-17 season.
During the 2023-24 season, gram was cultivated in 10.11 lakh acres in Australia and its production reached only 4.91 lakh tonnes.
According to the report of ABARES, the yield rate of gram is expected to remain high in both the major producing states - New South Wales and Queensland - during the current year, due to which the producers can get better returns.
Like gram, lentil production is also expected to increase this time in Australia. According to ABARES, the sowing area of lentil has increased to 22.91 lakh acres while its production is expected to improve to 16.85 lakh tonnes.
Although the average productivity rate of lentil is likely to decline slightly during the current year as compared to last year, but the total production is expected to improve due to increase in area.
The estimated production of the current season is more than double the ten-year average. According to ABARES, in the 2023-24 season, the lentil sowing area was 19.52 lakh acres while its total production was recorded at 15.68 lakh tonnes.
