Dhaka: The Bangladesh government has approved purchases worth Tk 1,700 crore, including 50,000 tonnes of rice, 10,000 tonnes of lentils, and 1.20 crore liters of soybean oil, along with two LNG shipments, amid growing concerns over energy and food supply.
At a recent Cabinet Committee meeting on government procurement, five proposals from various ministries were approved. These included:
Two LNG shipments to be delivered in May — one by a Singapore firm valued at Tk 593.75 crore, and the other by a UK company worth Tk 607.66 crore.
50,000 tonnes of non-Basmati Sela rice to be imported from a Singapore supplier at $416.44 per tonne, totaling Tk 254.02 crore.
10,000 tonnes of lentils to be procured locally by the Commerce Ministry for Tk 92.75 crore.
1.20 crore liters of soybean oil to be imported from a Thai company, sourced from Nigeria, for Tk 187.39 crore.
The purchases are part of the government’s 2024–25 financial year plan to ensure stable supplies of essential commodities.
