Bihar Floods: Compensation Announced for Rain-Damaged Crops

Patna. Kharif crops have suffered a lot due to torrential rains in various districts and floods in rivers during the current month (August) in Bihar, in view of which the government has announced compensation.
Under the Agricultural Input Subsidy Scheme, farmers will be provided compensation ranging from Rs 8500 to Rs 22,500 per hectare.
To avail the benefits of this scheme, the affected farmers will have to apply online by September 5. According to the initial assessment, heavy rains and severe floods have caused damage to various crops of Kharif season in 577 panchayats of 64 blocks of 14 districts in Bihar and in lieu of this, they will be provided compensation amount.
The 14 districts that have been identified or nominated for this include Patna, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Begusarai, Munger, Samastipur, Vaishali, Bhojpur, Lakhisarai, Katihar, Madhepura, Saran and Sheikhpura. Farmers in the panchayats of these districts whose crops have been damaged by 33 percent or more will get the benefit of the Agricultural Input Subsidy Scheme.
Under this scheme, farmers will be given compensation at the rate of Rs 8500 per hectare for crop loss in rain-dependent and non-irrigated areas and Rs 17,000 per hectare in areas with irrigation facilities, while an amount of Rs 22,500 per hectare will be provided for damage to perennial or multi-year crops (sugarcane etc.).
Compensation or grant will be given for damage caused in a maximum area of two hectares. Under this scheme, there is a provision to give a grant of at least Rs. 1000 for non-irrigated area, Rs. 2000 for irrigated area and Rs. 2500 for perennial crops. Assembly elections are going to be held soon in Bihar, so the government does not want to take any risk.
