Bumper Kharif Harvest Expected in Uttar Pradesh

★ Uttar Pradesh is set for a bumper kharif harvest this season as the total sown area has increased by 14 lakh hectares, reaching 138.40 lakh hectares, which is 11% higher than last year’s 124.39 lakh hectares. This figure is also 20% above the state’s normal average coverage of 115.20 lakh hectares over the past five years.
★ Paddy (including basmati) acreage has risen by 13.5% to 71.05 lakh hectares, marking one of the highest growth rates among all states. Nationwide, paddy sowing has increased by 4.7% so far.
★ Sugarcane acreage has seen a slight decline, falling from 27.25 lakh hectares last year to 27.05 lakh hectares this year. On the other hand, bajra cultivation surged by 34% to 11.11 lakh hectares, maize rose by 5.8% to 8.20 lakh hectares, and jowar increased by 15.3% to 3.09 lakh hectares.
★ Among pulses and oilseeds, tur (pigeon pea) sowing has grown by 5% to 3.79 lakh hectares, urad by 1.3% to 4.63 lakh hectares, groundnut by 32.3% to 3.56 lakh hectares, and sesame by 24.4% to 4.39 lakh hectares.
★ According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Uttar Pradesh received 649.9 mm of rainfall between June 1 and September 9, just 1% below the normal of 653.3 mm. Western Uttar Pradesh’s main agricultural belt recorded 20% surplus rainfall, while the eastern region faced a 13% rainfall deficit.
