Call for Consensus on Sugar Export Quota Allocation

New Delhi. The Union Food Secretary has said that this time the condition of sugarcane crop is looking very good and it is expected that sugar production will increase.
He has asked the industry organizations to try to build consensus on their demand that sugar export quota should be allocated only to those mills which are willing to export it and which have the facility to ship it from their plant.
Industry's opinion has been sought on this issue. The industry should take a unanimous decision after discussing among themselves and then inform the government about it.
It would not be right to say that there is no consensus in the industry but the Food Ministry has not received any opinion from the industry in this regard.
According to the Food Secretary, when it is received, all its points will be examined and a decision will be taken on that basis. It is worth mentioning that sugar export from India is currently included in the banned list and it can be shipped only in accordance with the quota fixed by the Central Government.
Under the present system, sugar export quota is fixed for all the mills of the country, whereas many mills are not interested in exporting it and many units do not have shipment facilities. Especially the millers of states far from the port like Uttar Pradesh,
Uttarakhand, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana etc. face a lot of difficulty in exporting sugar, so they either return their quota to the government or sell it to such mills which are capable of exporting sugar.
In view of this, industry organizations had said that sugar export quota should be allotted only to capable units. The government has no objection to this in principle but it wants to know the unanimous opinion of the industry on this so that there is no dispute in future regarding this and the matter does not reach the court.
