Canada: Pea and Lentil Acreage Estimates Surprise the Market
Peas:
★ According to Statistics Canada, farmers have planted a total of 3.504 million acres of peas this year, up from 3.123 million acres last year.
★ This rise surprised many, especially considering the challenges: China has imposed a 100% import duty on Canadian peas, there is uncertainty around India’s import policy, and trade relations with the United States remain tense. Despite all this, pea acreage has increased significantly.

Lentils:
★ Total lentil acreage in Canada is estimated at 4.38 million acres, higher than last year’s 4.21 million acres and above the initial estimate of 4.17 million acres.
★ This year, red lentil prices remained weak and unsold stocks piled up, leading many farmers to reduce red lentil acreage. On the other hand, strong demand and better prices for green lentils encouraged farmers to expand green lentil sowing.
★ While the increase in pea acreage was unexpected, the shift within lentil varieties was largely anticipated. Overall, pulse sowing in Canada has exceeded expectations, though the future direction will depend heavily on rainfall patterns and export policy developments.
