Canada – Pulses & Special Crops Convention (Last Week)
★ During the 2025-26 season, Canada is expected to have a huge stock of peas, putting pressure on prices. Farmers are unwilling to sell at the current low levels. Last season, delayed rains benefited the crop.
★ Stats Canada had earlier estimated yields at 36.6 bushels per acre, but actual yields are coming in at 40–60 bushels per acre.
★ Production estimates: Yellow peas – 30 lakh tonnes, Green peas – 5.5 lakh tonnes, Other categories – 2 lakh tonnes.
★ Carryover stock from last year was about 5.44 lakh tonnes, making total pea availability in Canada around 40 lakh tonnes.
★ If China withdraws the 100% duty on peas and India does not change tariffs, about 22 lakh tonnes of chickpea exports may be possible. Prices are expected to decline further. Overall, this situation is unfavorable for Indian markets.
★ To safeguard the pulse industry and farmers, the government should consider changing import duties.
★ This season started with favorable weather, but prolonged rains damaged crops, indicating that if even one season turns out poor, the situation could shift quickly.

★ The priority should be not only lowering inflation but also protecting farmers and the pulse industry.
