Vancouver. Harvesting for the new chickpea crop in Canada is in its final stages, and varying estimates of average yields and gross yields are emerging.
The government agency, StatsCan, initially predicted a chickpea yield of 21.5 bushels per acre, but one analyst estimates an average yield of 24 bushels per acre, implying a total production of 345,000 tons in Canada.
Another analyst notes that adverse weather initially threatened the chickpea crop in parts of southern Saskatchewan and Alberta, but growth has dramatically improved since mid-June, with a second crop emerging in most areas.
Yields are expected to increase by 7 to 10 bushels per acre in the most vulnerable areas and by at least 10 bushels per acre in other areas. Many analysts ignored this.
This analyst believes that total chickpea production in Canada could jump sharply during the current year, reaching an all-time high of 47.5-50 million tons.
As for chickpea quality, it is expected to be normal this year, but less good than in the past four years. One analyst estimates chickpea availability in Canada during the 2025-26 season to be 48 million tons, including backlogs, while another analyst's production figures are similar. The analyst stated that his total stock estimate is low and could improve further.
According to the analyst, approximately 23.5 million tons of chickpea exports from Canada during the 2025-26 marketing season (August-July) could be a new record. Prices are currently low, and price pressure may persist.
