Canada’s Pea Production Forecast to Rise 13.7% to 3.4 Million Tonnes

Vancouver. Pea production is expected to increase in Canada this year due to increase in sowing area and improvement in yield rate, but its export situation remains uncertain.

Its effect is being seen on the prices, which have fallen sharply in recent weeks. Apart from this, the tremendous challenge of Russia-Ukraine in the international export market also remains.

The government agency - Statistics Canada (Stats Can) has estimated the domestic production of peas to increase by 13.7 percent to 3.4 million tonnes this year compared to last year.

In this, the share of yellow pea production is estimated to increase by about 17 percent to around 2.8 million tonnes and the share of green pea production is expected to jump by 30 percent to around 7 lakh tonnes.

With the previous outstanding stock, the total availability of peas in Canada in the current marketing season of 2025-26 is expected to increase to the highest level after the 2020-21 season.

In Canada, the preparation for harvesting the new crop of peas has reached its final stage. Trade analysts say that although it is natural for prices to be under pressure due to increase in production,

this time the pea producers and exporters of Canada are facing a much more difficult challenge. Its global demand is not only weak but also uncertain.

Russian peas are increasingly dominating the Asian markets, while cheap peas from Ukraine are reaching Europe. Although the export offer price of yellow peas in Canada has come down to the level of Russia and Ukraine, its demand is still not increasing.

China remained the largest market for Canadian peas for the last seven years, but now its import has almost stopped there. China has imposed 100 percent import duty on Canadian peas. India's situation also remains uncertain.

The Agriculture Minister is in favor of imposing import duty on it. Limited quantity of peas can be imported from Canada in other Asian countries, but it is difficult to dispose of the huge stock.
