Case of giving GI tag to 20 varieties of rice is pending

It looks like the case for granting Geographical Indication (GI) status to 20 varieties of rice is still under review by the Indian Patent Office.
While 20 other varieties have already received the GI tag, these remaining ones, such as Seerag, Samba, and Kalapad, are waiting for approval.
The process involves careful study and analysis of the submitted applications and supporting documents.
The pending varieties, most of which are grown in relatively small areas (under 12,500 acres), have lower yields than traditional rice types, with Kalapad being the exception, producing up to 2200 kg per acre.
In a broader context, the Indian government has deregulated rice exports, removing previous restrictions and export duties.
This is seen as a positive move for rice farmers, as it allows for the smooth export of rice without any obstacles like the minimum export price (MAP) or the 20% export duty that was previously imposed.
