Chickpea Harvest Accelerates in Australia: Record Output Expected
★ North Queensland is witnessing its largest-ever chickpea harvest this year, with around 14,000 hectares sown and an average yield expected to be about 1 tonne per hectare.
★ Most of the new crop will be exported via the Port of Townsville, primarily to Bangladesh. Prices are lower compared to last year, with container packing rates at around USD 800 per tonne in Townsville, down from USD 900-1000 last season.
★ Chickpea exports to India remain slow due to weak demand. For the 2025-26 season, Australia’s total chickpea production is estimated at 2.1 million tonnes, with New South Wales expected to produce 1.23 million tonnes and Queensland about 835,000 tonnes.
★ In India, continuous price pressure has weakened import demand, causing both importers and exporters to remain cautious.
