Mumbai: A leading trade body, the India Pulses and Grains Association, said in its weekly report that domestic market prices of tur (pigeon pea) and urad (black gram) are likely to remain stable within a defined range with minor fluctuations during the current week, while chickpea prices may soften slightly.

Traders and pulse millers are purchasing chickpeas only in quantities sufficient to meet their immediate needs, as supply and availability remain comfortable, and imports are readily available at cheaper prices. Yellow peas are also being imported, and a significant stock is available.

According to the association, tur prices may improve somewhat due to stable demand and the expected commencement of government procurement, but a significant increase in urad prices seems unlikely given the ample availability of both domestic and imported stock.

The association's report stated that pulse millers are not showing strong interest in purchasing chickpeas. Their purchases are based solely on immediate needs. Limited demand is being observed for chickpea dal and besan (gram flour).

There is a good supply of cheaper chickpeas and yellow peas. Significant increases in chickpea sowing area have been observed in important producing states like Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Nationally, the chickpea production area is also ahead of last year. Sowing has also progressed well in Maharashtra. Weather conditions remain largely favorable for the crop.

According to the association, unless consumption increases, and given the current stage of crop development and weather conditions, a significant increase in chickpea prices seems unlikely. Currently, only a 10 percent customs duty is applicable on the import of desi chickpeas.
